Kate Cheney Chappell - PrintmakingMost printmaking starts with a hard surface from which an image can be transferred to paper. Lithographs begin with stone; dry point and etchings begin with copper or zinc plates. The surface is incised with tools, and may be etched with acid, before being inked, wiped, and printed on a press. Multiples of the same image (editions) are usually done in this way.
